Step 2 of 4

Right to work

Everyone working in the UK has to prove they're allowed to. It's quick — which route you take just depends on your citizenship.

Are you a British or Irish citizen? *

What works as proof

  • Easiest: a clear photo or scan of your passport photo page (British or Irish).
  • No passport? Your full UK / Irish birth or adoption certificate, plus an official document showing your National Insurance number (e.g. a payslip, P45, or HMRC letter).
Photo or PDF, up to 10 MB each. You can add more than one file.

How to get your share code

Since most physical documents (like BRP cards) are no longer accepted, you prove your status online and share a free code. Takes a couple of minutes:

  1. Go to gov.uk/prove-right-to-work and sign in.
  2. Choose "prove your right to work to an employer."
  3. Copy the share code — it starts with W and looks like W3X 9P3 PF2.
  4. Paste it below.
Share codes start with "W" and are 9 characters.
Please add your nationality.
A photo or scan of your passport photo page and any visa.

References

Most people aren't ready for this one yet — and that's completely normal. If you haven't handed your notice in, the last thing you want is us reaching out to your current manager before you're ready.

You can skip this for now. We'll follow up once you've handed your notice in and had the chance to give your referees a heads-up. Nothing goes out to anyone without you knowing first.
